Senior Network Lead/Engineer (network/linux)

Overview

A small, specialist University in Sopron is looking for a Senior Network Engineer/Lead to join their league of extraordinary gentlemen and help manage the network and the Linux environment. Our role is to provide support for its mission in teaching and research, and to shape up the vision for delivery of IT services in the 21st century allowing the university to achieve a leading scientific role in Europe.

 

You will be reporting to the Director of IT and work in a dynamic team who share support duties, troubleshooting and are responsible for ticket management and the day-to-day running of our systems across the Uni.

 

You will be expected to provide support for the live production service and business hours' support for the academic environment.

 

You must possess initiative and drive and be enthusiastic about technology in general. A detailed working knowledge of TCP/IP networking & Linux administration is an essential starting point to build a wide skill set.

Key Tasks

  • Manage all networking and Linux operations with the University Information Systems Centre (UIC)
  • Manage and develop the university’s network
  • Manage and develop the Linux server (SuSE) farm
  • Manage and develop the virtualisation (Xen) environment
  • Manage and develop the fibre channel storage system
  • Manage and develop the Asterisk telephony system
  • Work closely with the Director of IT on execution of strategies
  • Work closely with Head of Windows and Head of Applications Team to provide seamless services across all of our systems
  • Manage the digital signatures, certificates and related cryptography services
  • Support video conferencing and other presentation technology
  • Ensure all networking deployments are done to a high standard, with all supporting documentation completed
  • Maintain high-levels of uptime across the entire communications estate
  • Act as 3rd line support for any and all major issues which may arise
  • Keep contact and liaise with partners working on the related field


General skills

  • University or college degree in computing or equivalent experience
  • min. 5 years’ experience in the field
  • Have a history of working in a mission-critical environment
  • Background in the governmental sector or similar regulated industry
  • Experienced in datacentre & storage fabric design
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a multi-layered network environment


Technical Skills

  • CCNA to CCNP knowledge and experience preferred
  • In-depth networking knowledge (routers, switches, firewalls, VPN)
  • Experience of Cisco firewalls
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux server operating systems
  • Experience of managing file-, mail-, web-, MySQL, DNS, and RADIUS servers
  • Experience with virtualisation technologies
  • Script programming in UNIX shell command
  • Understand latency, and its effect on applications
  • Experience of wireless networking
  • Knowledge of network security
  • Experience of Asterisk telephony systems is highly advantageous
  • Advanced knowledge of Linux (SELinux, GRSecurity) security is advantageous
  • Exposure to asymmetrical cryptography systems is highly advantageous
